What Employers Want

Unit 1 What Employers Want

Specific Job Related-
When a person is applying for a job the employer will look for their experience in the certain area they are applying. One area they will look is there knowledge of the health and safety protocols,  the employers will look for if you know the correct way in lifting heavy objects and the correct way to deal with daily situations so that there is a lesser chance of the employee developing an injury or endangering his/her colleagues.
Another attribute is that if the applicant is aware of data protection, this is because with the data protection act the employer and employee are liable for the data they use and share and if they share private data with third party companies they could be sued and taken to court. This means employers will look for applicants that have experience dealing with data or have taken the necessary courses to ensure their use of data. For example if a data analyst was working with a customer’s personal data they would not allow that information be known by companies/people who could profit from that information.
General-
When employers are going through applicants to a certain job they will look for key words in the text one phrase being time management, having good time management means that the employer can tell the employee what they have to do and the employee will be able to spread the work out so that they are able to perform their task efficiently and effectively to a deadline.  Also the employee would need to be punctual so that the company could be as productive as possible and that the employee used to being on time for work and not being at risk of punishment or disciplinary action.
Another an employer would look for is that if you can work well part of a team and how you conduct yourself when working part of a team. This I a valuable attribute as when the work that you are producing takes a lot of components or the work needs to be done to an excellent standard with multiple opinions it is best that the people in the group are co-operative with each other and have an understanding on how to work with people effectively.
The knowledge of proper verbal and written English is required for most jobs due to the need for communication throughout the workplace and clients alike. Employers will look how confident you are at speaking to people face to face, in groups or over the phone.
Attitudes-
When employers are searching through applications one attitude is determination this is where you will put your all into a task and if you can’t complete it you will go out of your way to be able to get it to an acceptable manner. Employers like this because it means you are self-sufficient in your work and you will try your hardest at the job. In a position such as an IT technician determination would be needed to overcome certain problems which could be recurring and need to repeat a few times for the problem to be fixed and to not just give up at the first sign of failure.
Another one is tolerance this is being able to put up with peers and any other type of annoying people, this allows you be able to work in any sort of environment around all types of people. Employers will be looking for this due to many different personality types of there employees and will greatly help if their workforce is able to effectively work together.  In the workplace such as a customer assistant job in a shop the employee may have to deal with a less than hospitable customer but should be able to deal with their attitude and provide a satisfactory service for the customer.

An attitude that many employers is that they are comfortable in leadership roles, there are lots of positives when it comes to being able to lead a group appropriately as it will show that you are capable at organising what you have to do as well as assigning tasks to peers and making sure that they work to the best of their ability, this also shows that you are disciplined which includes skills such as punctuality, attendance and organisation skills. Employers are always looking for leadership skills due to progression of the job and will be looking for the people who stand out from the crowd so that you can be promoted and be lead into a leadership role within a company and effectively produce an exemplary service to the employer and a role model to the peers that can follow and strive to be able to reach the level of job that you have acquired.
